This may come as a huge surprise or no surprise at all but new research shows that women are better at forgiving than men. The Spanish University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) recently carried out a study of the emotional differences between the sexes and generations when it comes to forgiveness. The study found that while both sexes define forgiveness by, ” not bearing a grudge, reconciliation and understanding-empathy,” men placed more weight on not bearing a grudge. Professor Carmen Maganto , co-author of the study, said ,” A decisive factor in the capacity to forgive is empathy, and women have a greater empathetic capacity than males.”
The study also found that in order for someone to be forgiven, two conditions must be met. One is that they must “show remorse” and the other is the the angered party must ” not bear a grudge.” The study had 140 participants between 17 and 25 and 45 and 60 respectively.
